Books, books everywhere
August 26th, 2009 7:51 am

I am a book person, no question about it. I have books on the two bookcases on either side of my fireplace and books on the two bookcases in my bedroom, as well as books on the floor of my bedroom. Although I love my books and could not live without them, sometimes I wonder what I am going to do with all these books. As my collection grows my personal space narrows.  This got me to thinking about some things that could be done with books. I searched the internet and found some interesting ideas.

One of my family room bookcases

Some interesting ideas from http://www.inhabitat.com/

The Book Bookshelf by Yann Martel and Nick Hornby

Rodrigo Jaroseski of Porto Alegre, Brazil fashioned a remarkable corrugated coffee table out of several old phone books

Another great idea is just to make a nightstand or side table out of piled up books. It’s easy, it’s fun and gives a real eclectic look to any room.

If you have alot of books like I do maybe you could give some of these ideas a try or let me hear from you about your own book solution.

Decorating with Birdcages – Cathy Erickson
August 18th, 2009 10:37 am

We are pleased to present our Guest Blogger this week – Cathy Erickson of The Stylish House. Here is what Cathy has to say.”I am passionate about great design, the kind that draws you in and makes you want to stay awhile. I created The Stylish House to be filled with inspiration, and helpful tips you can use to enhance your home. I am an Interior Designer with a specialization in Kitchens and Baths. My approach is fun with finesse and flair. I received my Interior Design degree from Colorado State University, and graduated magna cum laude from an NKBA endorsed Kitchen and Bath Design program at Baker College. I utilize AutoCAD, and 20-20 technologies, in my design projects.”

Today Cathy talks about decorating with birdcages.

Neiman Marcus

I have never owned a feathered friend, but I have a nice collection of birdcages! I am hooked on birdcages, because they are whimsical, fun and interesting pieces. They have a sculptural quality which makes them useful when you need a little something to fill out a room. They make wonderful accessories and can be used in many different and unexpected ways.

Birdcages can work in modern or traditional spaces and about every style in between! Whether hanging high from a ceiling, placed on a table or tucked low in a corner these Tweet Retreats are versatile!

Birdcages come in a variety of prices, but you can find inexpensive ones if you keep your eyes open! When you spot one don’t get hung up about the color, because you can easily change it with the magic of spray paint. What is important to consider is the shape and size, because you usually can’t alter these features.

Summer Reading
August 11th, 2009 1:46 pm

Summer is a great time to catch up on your reading and so I have been re-reading Agatha Christie. Her books are good light summertime reading and lots of fun. There is aways a murder or two or three and gobs of suspects!

The setting is England, usually in a country house or mansion. You soon meet the cast of characters and find out fairly quickly who is going to be murdered. At that point you know that everybody and his brother had a grudge against the victim. Then, after the dastardly deed, it is just plain fun trying to figure out who done it!

Read any good books lately? Please share!
