While the United States did not officially enter the war until December 8, 1941 (the day after Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor), the handle lists the official starting and ending dates of the war -- beginning on September 1, 1939 when Germany, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi's, invaded Poland and ending when Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945. The handle incorporates some symbolic icons of the war. The front of the handle shows an LCM landing craft which came into prominence during the Second World War when they were used to land tanks and troops during Allied amphibious assaults - the most famous of which was the Normandy invasion, which till today remains the largest seaborne invasion in history. The back of the handle depicts an M4 or "Sherman" Tank, which was the main tank designed and built by the United States for allied forces in World War II. Below the tank, is an M1A1 Rocket Launcher. Also known as a "Bazooka" the M1A1 was became famous during World War II as one of the principle infantry anti-tank weapons used by the U.S. Armed Forces.Earthenware. Limited Edition of 350.
